# Jurat

A notarial act where the signer swears or affirms the truth of a document and signs in the notary’s presence.

A jurat requires the signature to be made in front of the notary, together with an oath or affirmation that the contents are true. Affidavits and sworn statements typically use one.

The difference from an acknowledgment matters: a jurat is about the truth of the contents, an acknowledgment about the authenticity of the signature.
